How Koreans live their lives in the dramas

Do you remember that MTV segment where they play three videos from three different artists, and the have the viewers spot what is common among the videos? I forgot what it's called, but I used to enjoy that segment. It was a test for my observation skills, albeit an easy one. Anyway, in the past months, I've been into Korean drama series, and after seeing several series, I noticed that most of them have similar scenes/at point are caught in a similar situation (even in movies, too). I listed what these common situations Korean drama characters usually get into.

1. Eating at a convenience store. At some point, the characters will have to eat cup ramyeon or triangle kimbap at convenience store located in their neighborhood, whether it is for breakfast, lunch, or late dinner. This is usually a moment where the characters open up to each other. If it is a Cinderella story, one of the characters would teach the rich one how to properly open a triangle kimbap.

2. First snowfall is important. Every Kdrama fan knows very well that the first day of snow is a special day--almost an event actually. On this day, expect a confession of love, or the most coveted first kissing scene between the lead characters, which will most definitely happen outside, while the characters were out and about or making their way home.

3. Drinking at a soju tent when something goes wrong. The characters have to face life challenges, right? So how do they deal with these problems that come along their way? First, go drinking at the tent vendor. It has to be soju, of course. And they will have fishcakes, chicken innards, and other streetfood as pulutan.

4. Serious conversations in the playground at night. Troubled characters usually end up having serious talks at the playground nearby, in the dead of the night.

5. Hanging out at the rooftop. Rooftop apartments must also be popular in Korean. If the building where characters live has a roof deck, at one point, they'd spent time in there--whether it be to just think, eat, drink, or play. Rooftop parties must be popular in Korea.

6. Crying in the rain. Being emotional while walking under the rain is also a scene common in Korean dramas. Whether the character walked out from a scene, or simply walking and then it rained, basta the characters will get soaked.

7. Treating a wound. Whether it’s a modern drama or a saguk, if there is a fight scene, more probably a scene where the woman (or vice-versa) helps the man treat his wound would follow. It is usually done with a mellow music on the background, the movements become slow and careful, and there will be eye contact, too of course, to stress that there is something going on between the two characters. Another form: caring for the sick.

If you are are planning to start bingewatching Korean dramas, watch out for these scenes. You'll definitely see at least one of them.
