Valentine's Date at Burnham Park

Tourists, residents and lovers might had an easy time deciding where to spend the Valentine's Day since there was a series of events happened at Burnham Park on February 14.

Fluvial Parade in the Mountains

In the morning, a fluvial parade which was participated by different barangays and local and national companies was held at the Burnham Lake. Barangays and national and local companies competed for the Panagbenga Best-looking Fluvial Float. A fluvial float is a boat decorated with flowers and intricate designs.

Eric Pangilinan, liaison officer to Panagbenga Festival Secretariat said that the main target of this event are the children who are brought by their parents to the park and the photo enthusiasts.

In the afternoon, people strolling along the park were entertained by stilt walkers, living mannequins, magicians and circus acts around the lake. When the night came, the fluvial parade turned into a night procession with the floats brightly lighted while festive music plays up.

At 7 in the evening, there was a grand fireworks display at Melvin Jones that fascinated the people. “Ang ganda ng fireworks display kasi yung ibang fireworks, bago. Hindi ordinary,” said Rose Ann PariƱas, who was enjoying the show with her cousins.

Phantom of the Opera in the Lake

The highlight of this year's Panagbenga is the staging of “Phantom of the Lake”, a classic musical play from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. The play drew a large crowd especially the lovers who are celebrating Valentine’s Day.

Marc Reagan Blanza said that he brought his girlfriend to the park to see the play. He said it would be a nice way to spend the Valentine's Day because there are a lot of things happening in the park that night. “Bago kasi yung Phantom of the Lake kaya na-curious ako. Maganda naman," he said.

Residents of Baguio said that they enjoyed the play because it was the first time that something like that happened at the very Burnham Lake. “First time kasi siya. Yung Phantom of the Opera pinalabas dito sa Burnham," a group of boys watching commented.

The play which was handled by stage personality Chinggoy Alonzo served as an innovation to the annual Baguio Flower Festival, Pangilinan said.

After the play that lasted for two hours, the viewers were entertained by the La Divas for an hour of singing. Viewers also enjoyed the night watching performances while dining at the fine restaurants by the lake.
